Roadtrip the scenic route Durban to Cape TownRoadtrip the scenic route Durban to Cape Town along the coast or through the interior. If you can’t choose between the country road and the coastal route, go for a third option which offers a bit of both. Country road (through the interior) The N3 will take you up through the “Highway”, (a corridor of suburbs), out into the country and into the lush Natal Midlands. Along the way there is a profusion of delightful places to stop and visit, or rest for the night, particularly in the Kloof, Hillcrest, and Assagay/Botha’s Hill areas. Have a drink at Stokers Arms; the popular railway pub in Kloof, or lunch at The View overlooking the Valley of a Thousand Hills. When you reach the beautiful, pastoral Midlands, take some time (overnighting is even better) to do the enchanting Midlands Meander. If you’re a watersports enthusiast, you might like to spend a day at Midmar Dam (Howick); Spioenkop Dam (Ladysmith); or Sterkfontein Dam (Harrismith) sailing, paddling, or boating. The N1 from Bloemfontein through Beaufort West takes you through the Karoo with its endless big skies and unusual arid beauty. Be prepared for some peace and quiet if you kuier (visit) here! Traditional Karoo farms are known for their food and hospitality, so stay an evening to break your trip. A patchwork quilt of vineyards and orchards will beckon you out of the arid Karoo and into the Cape Winelands. Behold the majestic mountains! Enjoy touring the various kelders (cellars), tasting wines, cruising down the Breede River, and the other activities available. When you’ve had your fill of picturesque wine route drives, get back on the N1 and make for Cape Town. Along the coast Should you have an affinity for swaying green hills of sugarcane and impressive sea views, you’ll relish the scenic route Durban to Cape Town down the Hibiscus Coast. The N2 from Durban takes you south along the coastline and then inland through the Transkei. If you have time, take the R620 at Hibberdene and explore the South Coast. When you get to the Transkei, watch for animals as they tend to wander on the roads! While you’re in East London, do something different and try a drumming circle at Imbizo Café. Charming Grahamstown is home to the lovely Rhodes University campus and full of interesting history. From there you’ll move on to Port Elizabeth; a fantastic holiday destination which is also the beginning of the renowned Garden Route, a magnificent drive from PE to Heidelberg. The Tsitsikamma National Park is a highlight of the journey. Places along Garden Route offer hiking, birding, swimming and boating in abundance. As the N2 continues towards Cape Town, keep your camera ready because the vistas are breathtaking. Country road and coastal route If you want to take the scenic route Durban to Cape Town and you’d like a bit of country road and coastal route; drive up from Durban to Bloemfontein, down to East London and then to Port Elizabeth to get onto the Garden Route. The Bloemfontein-East London (N6) part of this drive will give you a diverse display of the Free State Highlands, the Karoo plains and the coastal dunes of PE. Stop along the way to discover historical sites, walking trails, Bushman paintings and to spot some wildlife.
