Renting a car and taking a self-drive holiday is an excellent way to see the Eastern Cape. Car hire is much safer than public transport and far cheaper than chauffeured transport, so arranging car rental from Port Elizabeth Airport is a good way to explore the Eastern Cape. Places to go in the Eastern CapePort Elizabeth Port Elizabeth, (“PE”) is often referred to as “The Friendly City”. It’s also the watersports capital of South Africa with 40km of beaches that are well-used for surfing, sailing, swimming, walking, horseriding, beach sports and of course, just relaxing on the sand and enjoying the sun. PE has a temperate climate and the Indian Ocean is relatively warm all year round, so any time is a good time for a holiday! Sunshine Coast The Sunshine Coast starts in East London and ends at Tsitsikamma, incorporating Port Elizabeth and a series of delightful seaside towns and picturesque beaches in between. The Eastern Cape beaches are superb for holidays with their golden sands, warm waters and family-friendly facilities. Discovering the Sunshine Coast by car is an adventure. If you drive up the coast from PE you’ll find East London, Port Alfred and Kenton, and in the opposite direction there’s the famous Jeffrey’s Bay, known for its surfers and waves. The Sunshine Coast is accustomed to visitors, so it’s easy to find accommodation if you want to stay on for a few days and there’s plenty of entertainment to keep you busy. Addo Elephant Park If you’re planning a trip to Port Elizabeth you’ve probably heard of the Addo Elephant Park. Addo is an hour from PE by car and a magical experience. The park is a sanctuary for African Elephants which were severely endangered in the area a few decades ago. Today there are 350 elephants in residence. Addo offers various opportunities for visitors:
Along with elephants, look out for black rhino, Cape buffalo and different kinds of antelope. If you only have time for a day visit, there is a picnic area available. Tsitsikamma The Tsitsikamma is truly a jewel in the crown of the Garden Route. The Garden Route is a verdant, green area of land between PE and Swellendam and it shares many Eastern Cape attractions with the Sunshine Coast; the Tsitsikamma being one of them. The Tsitsikamma is an amazing region of mountains, established old forests and stunning waterways. The forest is made up of beautiful, ancient trees including Hard Pear, Kamassi, Stinkwood and Yellowwood. The waterways start as streams and bound over waterfalls, plunge into gorges and pour out towards the Indian Ocean. This is a fantasticplace for walking and hiking, and if you love birding look out for the KnysnaLoerie! The Sunshine Coast and the Garden Route are two of South Africa’s most renowned and popular holiday destinations. Organise your car rental from Port Elizabeth Airport to experience the Eastern Cape for yourself! |
